NZ Football's decision to introduce age restrictions and relaxed residency rules - players could opt to play for the federation in which they lived, rather than for the federation to which their club was affiliated - to its National Women's League competition at the start of the second decade of the 21st Century brought an end to the "A Team" era.

Over-age players were allowed, but in limited numbers, with the majority of players on the park at any one time required to be no older than twenty.
