Chatham Cup
The Chatham Cup is an institution in New Zealand soccer, and has been since its introduction in 1923. The equivalent of England's FA Cup, the trophy was gifted to the New Zealand Football Association by the crew of HMS Chatham, as a means of thanking the New Zealand public for the great goodwill shown the sailors during their time in this part of the world.

It has become the most sought after honour in New Zealand soccer, with a record number of teams - 132 - entering the competition in 1999. Three clubs have won the trophy six times, namely North Shore United, Christchurch United and University-Mt. Wellington, while Shore have reached the final on twelve occasions.

Arguably the most memorable final took place in 1972, a twice-replayed affair between Christchurch United and Mt. Wellington, after the final itself saw two of New Zealand's greatest clubs sharing eight goals in a classic encounter. The same clubs clashed again in another memorable final eighteen years later, The Mount, as they are affectionately known, turning the tables to win on penalties, after each side had scored three goals.

For five seasons from 1994, Auckland clubs dominated the competition, with the Northern Region being the game's strongest area in the country. All in all, Auckland association clubs have won the cup on 31 occasions, the next best province being Wellington, with seventeen triumphs.

However, Dunedin Technical, perennial semi-finalists in recent seasons, struck a blow for the rest of the country in the 1999 final, taking the trophy south of Cook Strait for the first time since 1991, and doing so in some style - 4-0 over Waitakere City. And a year later, the trophy remained south of the Bombay Hills, Napier City Rovers completing their second National League - Chatham Cup double when downing Central United 4-1 in the final.

It returned to Auckland in 2001, as Central United and University-Mt. Wellington produced one of the all-time-great Chatham Cup Finals - a 3-3 thriller which was ultimately decided on penalties, in Uni-Mount’s favour. This win saw them join North Shore United and Christchurch United as six-time winners of the country’s most famous knockout competition.

The 2002 final, the competition's 75th, was marked by the first-ever all-provincial Chatham Cup Final, as Napier City Rovers and Tauranga City United advanced to the ultimate stage of the competition at the expense of all challengers from the four main centres of New Zealand. Sadly, there was to be no fairytale ending for Tauranga in their first Chatham Cup Final, Napier recording their fourth win in the competition with an unspectacular 2-0 triumph.

A year on, and Northern Premier League outfit Melville United stole the hearts of the nation with a cup run which revived much of the romance of the competition. They ousted the last-standing National League team, Central United, in the semis, only to come across a team whose come-from-behind 3-1 in the final secured, for University-Mt. Wellington, Chatham Cup history - the first club to win the trophy seven times.

Coincidence or not, three of the next four finals featured Wellington teams, and were generally forgettable affairs. All three required extra time, and two went to penalty shoot-outs, with only the 2004 clash producing a goal, much to Miramar's delight. In 2006 and 2007, Western Suburbs were the Wellington team involved, with the former final noteworthy for the failure of Eastern Suburbs to score a single penalty in the shoot-out.

Wests' attempt to make it back-to-back triumphs saw them fall 10-9 on penalties to Central, who won the Chatham Cup in 2005 as well, albeit by scoring goals in regulation time to down Marist Palmerston North.

The final two years of the first decade of the 21st Century saw first-time winners of the Chatham Cup savouring the pleasure of parading the silverware, with East Coast Bays and Wellington Olympic recording odd-goal victories over Dunedin Technical and Three Kings United respectively.
The Jack Batty Memorial Trophy is presented to the Player of the Day at the conclusion of the Chatham Cup Final. The winners since its inception in 1985 are:
