Junior Matildas Hand Young Ferns A Hiding
by Jeremy Ruane
The Junior Matildas handed the Young Ferns a good old-fashioned hiding at the AIS Athletics Stadium in Canberra on August 17, scoring three goals in each half to triumph 6-0 and clinch the three-match series in emphatic fashion.

The host nation got off to a flying start in the ninth minute, Afrikah McGladrigan netting the rebound after Jessica Waterhouse's volley, from a corner, had hit the upright.

The early goal buoyed the Junior Matildas, who swiftly took charge of the midfield battle, Ayesha Norrie and Sunny Franco imposing themselves on proceedings in fine fashion.

It was Franco who doubled Australia's lead in the 26th minute, following a left flank raid, and she it was who turned provider six minutes before half-time, Amanda Beard the beneficiary of a cross from which she established the Junior Matildas' 3-0 half-time lead.

Straight from the kick-off, Franco notched her second goal of the game - and third of the series - to put to bed any hopes the Young Ferns harboured of mounting a comeback.

Alex Chidiac made it five on the hour, before Waterhouse wrapped up the scoring in stoppage time to inflict upon the Young Ferns a record-equalling defeat - the Kiwis lost 6-0 to the Korea Republic in Auckland in December 2007, and to Japan at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Finals in Trinidad & Tobago in September 2010.

The Young Ferns' next gathering will be at a training camp in September, while they will participate in the ASB National Women's League - to be known as the ASB W-League - when it kicks off in October, as a key part of their preparations for January's OFC U-17 Women's Championship, the winner of which will represent Oceania at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Finals in Costa Rica in March.
