Women's Football At Kiwitea Street
by Jeremy Ruane
The sight of some of New Zealand's leading women's footballers gracing the country's best football ground in a competitive fixture is a real rarity.

Indeed, you have to go back to the start of the 1990 season for the last such occasion, a day when Michele Cox scored a hat-trick as Eden thrashed Central 10-0 in a Northern Premier Women's League encounter.

The vast majority of the players who'll be seen in action on May 24 weren't even born when that match took place. But you can guarantee the New Zealand U-17 women's squad will be striving to emulate the feats of one of this country's greatest-ever players as they take to the hallowed turf of Kiwitea Street.

As part of their preparations for the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Finals, the Young Ferns
are playing competitive fixtures in the Auckland Metropolitan U-15 boys league, and this week's match sees them up against Central United's U-15 squad at 2.30pm.

The match represents a fantastic opportunity for the local footballing public to see the likes of Annalie Longo, Hannah Wall, Jessica Rollings, Lauren Murray, Leah Gallie and captain Briony Fisher in action, and see for themselves the progress being made by the Young Ferns as they build towards the opening fixture in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Finals, at North Harbour Stadium on October 28.

The Central squad will provide the Young Ferns with tough opposition, given Paul Posa's young charges are top of the table and have scored 26 goals in their six games to date.

NB  For the record, Central prevailed 1-0.
