Q & A
So You Thought You Knew Amber Hearn?
by Jeremy Ruane
If you weren't playing soccer, which sport would you be playing?

That's a hard one. I don't know … does indoor soccer count? Haha! Probably netball, which was what the family was brought up with. I play indoor netball every now and again, that is I give it a go, but I'm not really good at it - it's a non-contact sport, eh?

Which three items would you like to have with you on a deserted island?
A portable hair straightener - that would definitely have to be one item! - with batteries included; a volleyball net - something to play with; and a mirror - just for the hair, of course!

Who are the three people you would most like to invite to dinner?

John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard - go for the footy players!

Who would you most want to be for a day and why?
A millionaire housewife in Orange County, because they do nothing!! They go out, they go shopping … it's the highlight of their life, man! Their husband goes to work, they're millionaires, plenty of money to shop, flash cars, fancy restaurants … definitely the life!

What do you most like about soccer?
Scoring. Winning. The competitive side of the game. I love playing.

What do you most like about New Zealand, and your home town?
New Zealand - everything! I always said to myself that I couldn't wait to leave NZ when I was going to England, and when I came back for a holiday, I was so glad to be back. It's so laid back here, people are nicer, the scenery … you're in town, and everything's close to you. And of course, New Zealand is home.

Auckland - again, everything. Particularly the beaches, being so close. Socialising, going out to restaurants - there are class restaurants everywhere. And the social side of things generally.

Favourite airline?
Definitely Thai International.

Best hotel you`ve stayed in?
Probably the Marriott in Portland, Oregon, when we played the USA there in 2004. The Holiday Inn in China was good, too, apart from the squatters! It's a toss-up between those two.

Best attribute?
My personality - I'm easy-going, easy to get along with.

Craziest thing you've ever done?
Oh, God! Too many things, and a couple of them are x-rated!! I've got myself in trouble a couple of times, but in a practically joking sort of way - I didn't get arrested or anything like that, thankfully.

I guess doing something spontaneously - jumping on a plane or a train and going off to Amsterdam, for instance, which is what Vicky Butterworth and I did one day when in Doncaster!

We said to each other, “Let's go away” - real spur of the moment stuff! So two minutes later we jumped on the train - we didn't have any bags with us, and it didn't matter to us where the train was going. It's something we'd do every so often, and we'd stay wherever we ended up for a night, then come back the next day!! On this particular occasion it was Amsterdam!!

Will I do it in Canada? Maybe, maybe. I've been to Vancouver and Toronto before, but you've got to see places like Montreal, so I might do …! Hopefully it's not too cold when Ria and I get there, so we get to enjoy two summers - here and there!!
