Rebecca Sowden - A Personal Tribute
by Jeremy Ruane
It goes without saying that I've seen any number of women's soccer players throughout my involvement in the game over the course of the last twenty-odd years.

Among them, there are a specific few whom I hold in very high regard, as good friends as well as greatly admired footballers.

If you're familiar with this site, you'll know the bulk of them by now. Individually and collectively, they are my prime sources of motivation, a group of women who continually inspire me to attempt to do justice to their efforts on and off the park.

Among this elite combination of champions at the forefront of the women's game is Rebecca Sowden.

As well as being a fine player, and one of the best passers of a ball in NZ women's football today, there is a quality Bex exudes which demands her inclusion on my most admired list - her infectious passion for the game.

She has always struck me as being a very passionate person, both on and off the park, a strong character who'll give her all and then some for a cause she truly
believes in, of which there have been a few of late.

Most who haven't seen her before will know Bex from her impressive efforts in front of the TV cameras during the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Finals.

But there is also the AskUS initiative - see the 2005 story link above - to consider, as well as her just-completed 2009 Beach Soccer programme; these are just three cases in point - there are a few others.

I really admire and respect Bex for the willingness and desire she has to endeavour to make a difference, and the self-confidence and self-belief she exudes to follow those convictions through.

These, along with her strength of character and her willingness to proudly wear her heart on her sleeve for a cause she believes in, are attributes I hope this spunky, spirited young woman never loses - they are real strings to her bow.

Rebecca Sowden is someone whose efforts to stand tall and lead from the front I will always support and endorse, because of her willingness and preparedness to endeavour to make a difference. More power to her.
