The inaugural W-League play-offs took place in January 2009, and should have featured three New Zealand internationals in action. Sadly, the team for whom Rebecca Tegg and Marlies Oostdam played, Melbourne Victory, stumbled in their final premiership matches - they were occupying one of the four play-off spots going into the last two rounds, but finished fifth.

The Newcastle Jets confirmed second spot with a round to spare, however, so it was westward-ho to take in their semi-final against Canberra United, a match which presented an opportunity to gauge the on-field form of Football Ferns defender, Rebecca Smith, for the first time since the Olympics.

Having not had the chance to catch up with our European-based star since June 2007, the trip also provided the chance to put that wrong to rights. So we found a quiet corner in a Darby Street café the following morning, hit the record button on the micro-corder, and over a cappucino and a Coke, had a good chat ...
