SERENA
VENUS
I must admit I'm not a big fan of Venus and Serena Williams as tennis players.

Make no mistake, it's got absolutely nothing to do with the colour of their skin - a person's pigment shouldn't even come into the equation, be it in sport, employment ... whatever.

I just don't like the crash-bang-wallop style of tennis which they use to great effect in overwhelming their opponents. With their "power game" tactics, the women's game has become more and more akin to a shortened version of men's tennis, which, with the exception of "Sir" Roger Federer,  I tend not to watch because of its lack of variety.

But you cannot deny that women's sport would be the poorer without them, Serena particularly.

Once the world's highest-paid female sports star, she is a stunningly powerful young woman, the latter aspect evidenced by the muscular definition so visible in her arms, shoulders and thighs.

She's also very much her own woman, with her designer clothing and so on.

Initially, she was in the shadow of her older sister, and her progress wasn't greatly aided by her father's penchant for doing the talking for both Williams sisters in months past.

But Serena has silenced him, and others, with her tennis-playing prowess, and has earned the respect of many more folk with her displays of dignity in defeat - she doesn't lose often, it must be said, but when she does come a cropper, by and large her opponent's efforts are openly acknowledged ... although it goes without saying that there'll be hell to pay next time they meet!!

As I said, I'm not a big fan of the Williams
sisters' over-powering presence on-court. But when it comes to being a role model, Serena, in particular, is right up there, for mine.
