A seismic survey vessel, equipped with the most modern equipment to explore the lie of the land beneath the waves, she was owned and operated by United Geophysical, a subsidiary of the Bendix Corporation.

Powered by General Motors engines, she was a single screw vessel which boasted an identical twin in "Unitedgeo 2". Her time on the New Zealand coast was funded by Esso Petroleum, with oil exploration surveys the prime objective of the venture to our area of the world.
