This quartet of trawlers was the heartbeat of Sanford's fishing fleet at Onehunga for roughly two decades. Consequently they were highly frequent visitors to the Port, more often than not arriving or departing in pairs, until the capsize of "San Manukau", off Northland's Cape Karikari on 28 January 1996, with the loss of one life. You can read the report on this here.

Thomson Towboats salvaged "San Manukau", and after the necessary work was carried out she changed hands, operating as "Aberdeen Star" for five years before Napier-based Forty South Ltd acquired her and renamed her "Pacific Challenger".

"Albert Sanford", named after the founding father of the Sanford company, was next to leave the fold, being sold to Wellington-based Nino's Ltd, who changed her name to "Taudre" in 2011.

The picture opposite shows "Albert Sanford" (right) and "San Rakino" in transit to Onehunga. The latter lost power and began drifting, and the former came to the rescue.

"San Rakino" endured a flooding episode while trawling off the West Coast with "San Hauraki" in October 2005 - refer to the MNZ Accident Report below right - and is currently on the market. A model of "San Rakino" is on display in the NZ National Maritime Museum in Auckland.

"San Hauraki", meanwhile, is still flying the Sanford flag, as can be seen in the picture below, taken by Zelda Wynn and sourced from www.shipspotting.com
