Melville Open Up Six-Point Lead
by Jeremy Ruane
Melville United have opened up a six-point lead atop the Lotto Northern Women's Championship on June 15, their 4-1 win at Onehunga-Mangere United seeing them maintain their unbeaten league campaign.

Nyah Nikau gave the visitors to Mangere Domain a sixth minute lead, but Melville weren't assured of the points until the hour mark, with Mia Humphrey and Maia Oxenham scoring after half-time.

Nikau wrapped up the scoring in stoppage time, restoring Melville's three-goal advantage after Jasmine Nathan had struck a consolation goal for "The Scarlets", who remain adrift at the foot of the table.

Melville's increased lead came about thanks to the outcome at Waikaraka Park, where Jaime Govind's goal inside the opening sixty seconds earned Birkenhead United a 1-0 win over Onehunga Sports on a day when Franklin United's clash with Cambridge was postponed due to the South Auckland club's Kate Sheppard Cup commitments.

The match between Northern Rovers and Central United at McFetridge Park saw the points shared, Isabella Cranfield netting an equaliser six minutes from time for the visitors after Ellen Carter had broken the deadlock with seventeen minutes remaining.

The competition reaches the half-way mark this weekend with two games on Matariki and two on Sunday. Birkenhead and Franklin meet at Shepherds Park on Friday, while "The Green Machine" and OMU clash at Waikaraka Park at the same time. Sunday's fare sees Central welcoming Melville to Kiwitea Street while Northern head south, Cambridge's John Kerkhof Park their destination.
