"Queen Of Diamonds" And "Ross The Boss" Go Nap
by Jeremy Ruane
For the second time this season, Natalie Olson has scored five goals in a Central Region Premier Women's League game as the "Queen of Diamonds" spearheads Wellington United's bid to retain their title.

On the first occasion, her quin-trick paved the way for an 8-2 win at Waterside Karori. Six weeks later, Olson was mauling Marist Palmerston North's defence, her five-goal haul helping "The Diamonds" to a 7-0 win at Newtown Park, where Farina Anchico and Olivia Catherwood ensured their prolific team-mate's name wasn't the only one on the scoresheet.

With closest challengers Wellington Phoenix's clash with Moturoa not taking place till King's Birthday weekend, "The Magpies" took the chance to consolidate third place on the table by thrashing Miramar Rangers 7-1 at Dave Farrington Park.

Olson wasn't the only player to run riot on the scoresheet this weekend, as "Ross The Boss" - Nicola Ross - also scored five for the victors in this one-sided affair, her quin-trick being scored in a mere half-hour.

Renee Bacon also chimed in for the victors, while Rangers goalkeeper Stella Pratt was credited with an "oggie" on a day substitute Paige O'Connor netted a late consolation goal for the home side.

Petone and Taradale both recorded 6-0 wins in the round, with Palmerston North United and Victoria University respectively put to the sword. In United's case, defeat came on home soil at Memorial Park, where Pepi Olliver-Bell was in first half hat-trick-scoring form for the visitors.

Jazz Shailer and Jessica Owens-Blackmore - the latter twice - added the extras after the interval on a day Sam Waru and Megan Thomas both struck twice to guide Taradale to victory at Taradale Park, where Caitlyn Turner and Cara O'Neill added the extras for the home team at the expense of the students.

Next weekend's action sees the Palmerston North derby set down the Memorial Park on Sunday, a day when Miramar entertains Wellington Phoenix at Dave Farrington Park. Twenty-four hours earlier, "The Diamonds" make the trip to Onuku Taipari Domain to take on Moturoa, while Petone and Taradale meet at Petone Memorial Park on a day "The Magpies" should hold too many guns for their student-laden opponents at Karori Park.

Reigning South Island Women's League champions Cashmere Technical find themselves in fifth place at the conclusion of seventh round action in the competition, a result of a 3-0 thumping from arch-rivals Coastal Spirit at Garrick Memorial Park.

Both teams failed to impress during a scoreless first half in which Cashmere hit the crossbar, but once Britney-Lee Nicholson broke the deadlock on the hour, the game was up for the title-holders, who succumbed to further goals from Frankie Morrow and Margi Dias inside the last ten minutes as they chased an equaliser.

That win leaves Spirit in third spot, six points behind the pace-setting Dunedin City Royals and Otago University, who respectively recorded their sixth wins of the campaign in contrasting fashion.

"The Royals" romped to an 8-0 rout of Nelson Suburbs at Logan Park, where Amy Hislop led the way with a hat-trick, the first two goals of which were struck inside the opening sixteen minutes. Raegan Potter bagged a brace of goals, while Hannah Mackay-Wright, Toni Power and substitute Georgia Kennedy also had reason to celebrate.

Dunedin lead the way on goal difference from Otago, who, at Logan Park twenty-four hours later, came from behind to down Canterbury Universities 3-2, Liv Deane having put the visitors in front after just four minutes.

A brace of Isra Khan goals either side of the half-time whistle turned things round for the natives, and when Leila Hausia-Haugen potted a penalty twenty minutes from time, it looked like the points were safe for the home team. Canterbury substitute Tori Hill had other ideas, however, setting up a grandstand finish four minutes from time, but time was the visitors' enemy, Otago holding on for the win.

It was a good weekend for the Dunedin clubs, with Roslyn Wakari climbing to fourth place on the table after seeing off Nomads-Waimakariri United 2-1 at Kendall Parrk, where Jasmine Barrett's strike for the locals was sandwiched by goals in each half from Zoe Pratley and Catriona Galvin for "The Ponies", the latter's penalty proving to be the match-winner.

All eyes will be on the clash of the top two at Tahuna Park next Saturday, with Spirit taking on Halswell United at Tane Norton Park twenty-four hours later. In other Saturday fixtures, Nelson and "The Ponies" meet at Saxton Fields, while Canterbury Universities will look to inflict further problems on Cashmere at English Park.
