Spirit's "Baker's Dozen" Hammers Halswell
by Jeremy Ruane
Coastal Spirit recorded the biggest ever victory in the four-year history of the South Island Women's League on August 23, humiliating Halswell United 13-0 at Halswell Domain as they unleashed their frustrations on the bottom-placed side, who appear destined to return to the Mainland League competitions at season's end.

Britney-Lee Nicholson led the way with five goals as "The Hawks" succumbed to "Queen B" and her chums, with Margi Dias helping herself to a hat-trick on a day Laura Newman struck twice and both Sam Whyte and Sophie Hawkins once apiece for Spirit, who also benefited from a Maisie Bennie-Steel "oggie".

Across town at Garrick Memorial Park, Cashmere Technical relied on goals in each half from Rebecca Lake and Lara Wall to overcome second-placed Otago University 2-0. Neither side can catch league leaders Dunedin City Royals, who were one of three teams to sit out this weekend's action.

The other match, which took place at Logan Park, saw Nelson Suburbs score a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Roslyn Wakari, Sola Tsuruta's stoppage time penalty sealing the deal for the visitors after Abigail Platt had countered Isla Smith's goal for "The Ponies", for whom this was their last game of the season.

Wednesday evening sees a preview of the Morrison Mitsubishi Reta Fitzpatrick Cup Final taking place at English Park, with Cashmere and Canterbury Universities locking horns. The students back up against "The Hawks" three days later, knowing that three points at English Park will relegate Halswell.

Nelson and Otago meet at Saxton Fields in the other Saturday fixture, while on Sunday, Spirit welcomes Nomads-Waimakariri United to Tane Norton Park on a day "The Royals" and their predecessors as South Island Women's League champions, Cashmere, square off at Tahuna Park.

Details:
Cashmere Technical 2 (R. Lake (41), L. Wall (65)), Otago University 0  HT 1-0
Halswell United 0, Coastal Spirit 13 (L. Newman (1, 12), M. Dias (4, 78, 81), B. Nicholson (9, 44, 57, 79, 87), S. Hawkins (30), S. Whyte (36), "oggie" (69))  HT 0-7
Roslyn Wakari 1 (I. Smith (21)), Nelson Suburbs 2 (A. Platt (58), S. Tsuruta (90 pen))  HT 1-0

Petone is poised to take out the final National Women's League berth after goals in each half from the ultra-reliable Pepi Olliver-Bell and substitute Sam Hatchwell - just two minutes after she entered the fray - secured a 2-0 win at Taradale in the penultimate round of Central Region Premier Women's League fixtures.

They remain a point clear of last season's beaten Grand Finalists, Waterside Karori, who vanquished Victoria University 6-1, a result inspired by Renee Bacon's hat-trick. Isabella Ismail-Sanders and Taylor Cooper were also on target for "The Magpies", while Adele Lonergan and Lucea Bedford netted for the students, the latter at the wrong end.

With champions Wellington United having played their seventeenth round game a week earlier, Wellington Phoenix consolidated second place with a 5-0 mauling of Miramar Rangers at Fraser Park, where Bridie Christie was in first half hat-trick-scoring form. Anahera Easton and substitute Ruby Barber were also on target for the league runners-up.

Palmerston North bragging rights belong to Marist, after they came from behind to see off United 4-2 in the derby at Arena Manawatu. United's Alana Holroyd scored after eleven minutes, but her strike was matched seven minutes before half-time by Charlotte Noakes.

Goals from Marist's Marina Ishimoto and Chardonnay Ross-Elvin just after the hour prompted a swift response from Jorja Horn, setting up a grandstand finish, the contest only being settled when "Supersub" Hannah Marginson clinched the points for Marist in stoppage time.

Next weekend's final round of action spotlights the clash of Petone and the students on Saturday at Petone Memorial Park, where a home win will condemn Victoria to relegation. "The Magpies" will be hoping the visitors can do them a huge favour in that match, but taking care of business against Wellington Phoenix will be far from easy.

The other match on the Sabbath sees Moturoa and PNU squaring off at Onuku Taipari Domain, while on Sunday, "The Diamonds" sign off on their latest championship triumph by taking on Miramar at Dave Farrington Park on a day Marist Palmerston North welcomes Taradale to Arena Manawatu.

Details:
Marist Palmerston North 4 (C. Noakes (38), M. Ishimoto (63), C. Ross-Elvin (66), H. Marginson (90)), Palmerston North United 2 (A. Holroyd (11), J. Horn (69))  HT 1-1
Taradale 0, Petone 2 (P. Olliver-Bell (37), S. Hatchwell (85))  HT 0-1
Victoria University 1 (A. Lonergan (52)), Waterside Karori 6 (R. Bacon (1, 52, 89), "oggie" (71), I. Ismail-Sanders (73), T. Cooper (84))  HT 0-1
Wellington Phoenix 5 (A. Easton (8), B. Christie (18, 33, 44), R. Barber (87)), Miramar Rangers 0  HT 4-0
