South Island Women's League management have been presented with something of a fixture conundrum by Mother Nature, after three of the weekend's four scheduled matches were called off due to fog, and the knock-on effects of same.
Coastal Spirit got to see the South Island's east coast from above on Saturday morning, but their flight couldn't land at Momona Airport, due to fog enshrouding Dunedin and surrounds. So their visit to Roslyn Wakari was postponed.
As was Dunedin City Royals' visit to Halswell United, because while Spirit were taking in the scenery up above, the league leaders were cooling their heels in the airport departure lounge, fog meaning their flight to Christchurch couldn't depart.
Twenty-four hours later, the repercussions of Mother Nature's impromptu visit to "the Edinburgh of the South" meant Otago University couldn't make the trip north to take on Cashmere Technical.
Their flight was cancelled, a quite common occurrence in the aftermath of a weather event causing an airport closure, as the aircraft intended for the scheduled flight is more often than not at another location and needs to be repositioned before normal service can resume.
All this meant that the only game to take place in this round was the Christchurch derby at Kendall Park, where a brace of Liv Deane goals propelled Canterbury Universities to a 3-1 win over Nomads-Waimakariri United, for whom substitute Emily Brown netted a late consolation goal, Kyra Lazor having supplemented Deane's double earlier in the half.
League management will be hoping Mother Nature doesn't pay any more visits in the coming weeks, as they've got four games to reschedule, all involving inter-city travel, and there aren't too many free dates available - it may already be a necessity to extend the season by a week!
All being well, the action on the last weekend in June sees "The Royals" entertaining NWU at Logan Park on Saturday, twenty-four hours before Otago and "The Hawks" meet at the same venue.
Nelson make their latest trip to Christchurch, Cashmere's Garrick Memorial Park their destination on Sunday, while across town at English Park that day, the students take on "The Ponies".
The final quarter-final in the Morrison Mitsubishi Reta Fitzpatrick Cup takes place on Wednesday evening at English Park, with Nomads-Waimakariri and Coastal Spirit looking to join Canterbury Universities, holders Cashmere Technical and surprise packet Selwyn United in the semi-final draw.
Details:
Nomads-Waimakariri United 1 (E. Brown (82)), Canterbury Universities 3 (L. Deane (17, 64), K. Lazor (54)) HT 0-1

Goals were scarce in the latest round of Central Region Premier Women's League action, with just nine scored in the five matches which took place across Matariki weekend. Crucially, two of them were netted by Wellington United's dynamic duo, Natalie Olson and Hannah Pilley, as "The Diamonds" overcame a stern Waterside Karori challenge 2-0 at Newtown Park.
That win maintained their five-point advantage over Wellington Phoenix, who accounted for Palmerston North United by the same score at Fraser Park, where Bridie Christie and substitute Ruby Hale stuck second half goals.
Petone's pursuit of the top two suffered a setback at Arena Manawatu, where Marist Palmerston North held the visitors to a 1-1 draw thanks to Olivia Stewart's equaliser deep in stoppage time, Kyra Elder having given Petone the lead seven minutes before half-time.
Captain Anna Hinton and Fernanda Toscani led the celebrations at Onuku Taipari Domain as Moturoa climbed off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 win over Victoria University, who have replaced their conquerors on the bottom rung.
And a Caitlyn Turner goal early in the second spell clinched a 1-0 win for Taradale over Miramar Rangers in a match which was transferred to Wakefield Park. Team manager - and Hawkes Bay women's footballing legend - Gail Hall was an unused substitute for the visitors to the capital.
Only four games are scheduled next weekend, with the school holidays forcing the rescheduling of the students' clash with Miramar to mid-August. Saturday's fare sees "The Magpies" welcoming Marist to Karori Park, while Moturoa are also on the road, Petone Memorial Park their destination.
The top two are in action on Sunday, with "The Diamonds"' travels taking them to Memorial Park to take on PNU, while Taradale entertain Wellington Phoenix at Taradale Park.
Details:
Marist Palmerston North 1 (O. Stewart (90)), Petone 1 (K. Elder (38)) HT 0-1
Miramar Rangers 0, Taradale 1 (C. Turner (53)) HT 0-0
Moturoa 2 (A. Hinton, F. Toscani), Victoria University 0 HT 1-0
Wellington Phoenix 2 (B. Christie (54), R. Hale (75)), Palmerston North United 0 HT 0-0
Wellington United 2 (N. Olson (14), H. Pilley (59)), Waterside Karori 0 HT 1-0
