Commissioned by the Royal NZ Navy in 1975, she was a Lake-class Inshore Patrol Vessel powered by two 3000hp Paxman JCM diesels, producing a service speed of 25 knots.

Crewed by two officers and nineteen ratings, she had a range of 3000 nautical miles, and was armed with two 12.7mm machine guns and one 81mm mortar.
Her pennant number was P3571, and she was decommissioned in 1991.

"Hawea" was used primarily as a fisheries patrol vessel, with her crew boarding and inspecting the numerous overseas fishing vessels working off the New Zealand coast before the 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone was introduced in 1978.

Named after Lake Hawea (hence Lake-class), her motto is "Kia Toa" (be brave), while the ship's badge is a Kotiati (hand-held weapon).

She was sold to Australian interests in 1991, and was last seen employed as a work boat in Queensland.
