Built in Lobith by De Hoop, she was powered by one 360hp MaK diesel, producing a service speed of 9 knots.

Originally built for the Wanganui Shipping Company, she operated a Wanganui - Wellington - Lyttelton - Timaru service as "River City", and suffered a cargo fire while at sea on 7 November 1959 and had to put in to Kaikoura for the local volunteer fire service to douse the flames. The ship emerged unscathed, not so the cargo.

She was purchased by Holm Shipping in 1964 and renamed "Holmbrae", under which name she traded between Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington and New Plymouth, a service which was later extended to Onehunga and Raglan.

She ran aground off Otago Harbour on 8 June 1966, and within a month had been sold to New Hebrides interests.

She arrived in Onehunga for handing over at the end of July, and departed for pastures new on 7 August 1966, sailing under the name "Paulmarkson". Her renaming took place four days prior to sailing, and on 6 August she was relocated to the western berth at Onehunga - the end of the wharf closest to the Manukau Heads, which was rarely utilised by ships.

Soon after, she undertook a two-year charter to International Geophysical - oil exploration work in Bass Strait was her calling during this period. Upon returning to New Hebrides, she operated for a handful of owners for the next two decades before being laid up in mid-1988. On 19 December 1989, she was scuttled as a dive wreck on the western side of Abokisa Island, Vanuatu.
